Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
