EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
