The Video Platform Provides The Community Control to Decrease AI-Generated Videos in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to lessen the amount of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform disclosed that it now features over 1 bn AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The update is being tested over the coming weeks before a global launch. This advancement comes amid a surge in content created by AI, fueled by recent AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that nearly a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service only show clips produced artificially. A large amount of this material is deemed “AI slop”, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is typically nonsensical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that a lot of users appreciate content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to give people the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its network labeled as AI-generated. In total, over 100 mn pieces of content are submitted to the app each day, making clips made by AI a limited percentage of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Members will be capable of reduce or increase the level of artificial media they see by opening the topic control option in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that currently be controlled under the setting include current affairs, clothing, cosmetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its rules require content makers to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids harmful deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the app will now apply an AI-generated label to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an cross-platform project for identifying artificial media. This step is designed to deter users from trying to circumvent the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is also launching a two million dollar AI literacy fund for specialists and organizations to create educational content about ethical AI use. This initiative will benefit educational bodies focused on teaching programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has supported its safety measures, following discussion over plans to lay off numerous review team members in the UK. It is set to reduce 439 jobs in its trust and safety department in its British office, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A company official explained that people-led review would remain essential, but automated tools can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content before it is viewed by staff. TikTok stated a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content seen by safety staff over the last 12 months due to intervention by its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with unsafe media as swiftly, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
